Chris Webster
Chris is in his final year of the Bachelor of Information Technology program at the University of Technology, Sydney (Australia). Chris graduated from high school at Barker College, on Sydney's upper North Shore, in 2005.
From an early age, Chris has had a keen interest in technology and making it accessible to others. In 2005, as part of an HSC English major work, he created a website to educate others about cyberbullying. From his research when making the site, Chris concluded, as have many bullying experts, that the best weapon against this problem is awareness.
Cyberbullying refers to bullying through information and communication technologies – simply put – “bullying for the 21st century using email, text messages and the internet”. Recent polls have shown that one-third of teenagers have had mean, threatening or embarrassing things said about them online. It has the same kind of insidious effects as the traditional form of bullying, “turning children away from school, friendships, and in tragic instances, life itself.”
Chris has chosen two mechanisms for broadening the awareness of this topic:
The first was to create this interactive website about cyberbullying to generate awareness about the issue. This website is aimed at high school students, as it is at this age that most children are affected. Students direct themselves on an interactive journey through a detective’s office to learn more about cyberbullying. These young teenagers get to hunt and explore their way through a fun website uncovering clues and information about cyberbullying and how to recognise what to do. Chris now updates and maintains this website, which resides here, at www.cyberbullying.info.
Chris's second approach is to promote awareness amongst parents and educators to recognise the power of technology in this age group and incorporate this into school policies and pastoral care programs. Chris has previously presented to teachers, parents and students from the Loreto Schools, Barker College, the Parramatta Catholic Education Office, the Mercy Secondary School Association, The Headmasters Conference of Australia (NSW Branch), and the Australian Heads of Independent Schools Association, as detailed below, in both the states of New South Wales and Victoria, Australia.
Chris received a Commendation in the University of Technology, Sydney's Human Rights Awards in 2006. You can read more about this on the UTS Faculty of Information Technology's webpage.
