Examples of Cyberbullying
- In June 2003, an eleven-year-old Japanese girl killed her classmate. The girl told police that she killed her classmate because she was angry about messages that had been posted about her on the internet.
- Greg Frawley left Hurlstone Agricultural High School after unidentified students set up a website to accuse him and another teacher of being child molesters who should be killed.
- Helen Adgar believes her teenage son died after being on the receiving end of a silent but potent form of bullying - text messaging.
- Three year 7 students were suspended on November 16 after they posted violent images on the internet depicting a fellow classmate being murdered with a machine gun.
- 10 year old Phoebe told the BBC: "They started phoning me saying that I was in the cow club and that I should phone the loser line...they got my friend's little sister to whisper stuff like 'I'm going to kill you.'"
- 15 year old Kylie Kenney felt like she had 'had no escape'. Two classmates allegedly concocted a website title 'Kill Kylie Incorporated', making threats and homophobic comments.
- Ghyslain Raza became known throughout the internet in May 2003 as the 'Star Wars Kid' when a video he recorded of himself was leaked online. Ghyslain is now the most downloaded male on the internet. The most downloaded female is Paris Hilton.
- Alex spent many hours chatting online in his bedroom. Other kids knew he was thinking about taking his own life. They dared him to commit suicide, thinking it was a big joke. He was deadly serious. One afternoon while he was home alone, Alex pulled his grandfather's antique shotgun out from under a bed, loaded it with shells and killed himself.
- Victor Scarpelli, principal at an American high school, wondered what was up when students said they?d talked to him the previous night and knew he liked rap. Turns out they'd communicated with him through his MySpace profile. Three sites, in fact, claimed to be his.
- Ryan Patrick Halligan was bullied for months online. Classmates sent the 13-year-old boy instant messages calling him gay. He was threatened, taunted and insulted incessantly by so-called cyberbullies. Finally, in 2003, Ryan killed himself. His father says he couldn't take it anymore.
- In online conversations, Ashley and other friends led Ryan to believe that she might be interested in him - but then quickly turned it all around on him. "When he sort of got interested, we're like. 'Oh well, we would never go for someone like you. I can't believe you would think that.'"
